joop...if tom hanks is a bad actor ,i wonder who you would consider is a good actor...i dont recall seeing a bad tom hanks movie ,ever
Shht, don't bring Disney on an idea. Soon we'll be seeing that in Pearl Harbor 2, the fitght for the Solomon islands Talking about Band of Brothers. There's also a book about them (same title of course). But, i recently saw a new book called "Biggest Brother" and that one goes about Dick Winters himself. Don't know if anybody of you read it so far. (Don't think that i have read it so far. i just saw the book, now i wait ntil it's in the librabry so i can read it for free ) As for the movies: Enemy at the Gates is also a nice movie. Zaitsev versus Koening. Bassed on a rumor that both men did fought against each other. (And of course with a silly love story in it else Holywood wouldn't made the movie)
EatG is a terrible movie. Not just because of the outrageously silly romantic subplot, but also because there was never a German sniper in Stalingrad. And most of the duration of the movie you find yourself thinking, "where is the battle of Stalingrad?"
Yeah i had that too. Stalingrad looks like a huge no-mansland whit occasionally a couple of German soldiers in a small group popping up before the sniper rifle. However, the first scene of Vassili (The one where he has to charge the german lines and end ups hiding in the fountain) was trully Stalingrad. ("They are retreating, shoot them" and then the machinegun). Roel, if Major Koening was never there in Stalingrad, where did the rumor came from? This is what wikipedia says but they also leave it in the middle http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erwin_König
Like it says in the Wikipedia article, there is no evidence of König's existence in German records. It looks like the Russians made him up as a counterweight to their own hero snipers. Actually a "real" depiction of the battle of Stalingrad would involve semi-constant close-quarters fighting. The Russians managed to halt the German advance by learning to use a German weakness against them, which was that the Wehrmacht preferred to fight at range, with good visibility. The Russians responded by staying constantly within grenade-tossing range of the German lines and harassing them all day and night. This way they never got any rest and were forced to fight differently from how they had been trained to.
Allow me to quote myself from another topic. I took out points 1 and 3 as they have nothing to do with it.
Talking about movies. Here's something Goebels sais on 17 april 1945 in the Ministary of Propaganda. "Gentlemen, over 100 years, these horrible times that we live through now will be shown in a beautifull colormovie. Don't you want to play a rol in that movie? Hang on now, soi that the public wouldn't yell at you when you appear on the screen." With the Battle for Berlin that is about to begin in that time, it seems that Goebels knew that the movie "Der Untergang/Downfall" was going to be made.
uh!!! There are many very good films about the WWII One of my favourites is "Empire Of The Sun". I guess, you forgot it. It is brilliant. About an English boy traying to survive under Japs occupation of Shangai on 1941.
WOW ...i remeber trupets fade now...the movie opens with a tuff infantry sgt dragging a badly BURNED infantry man ,,,i remember thinking theres no fire anywhere ..how did this guy get burned? i dont recall it being addressed ...he was shot down in a burning mustang ? he was a tanker in a brewed up sherman ? he was on pt 109 ? the dialog was super meldramatic as i recall ...i lost intrest and turned it off ...it had B movie written all over it ...i will watch it again ...since so many of you seem to like it...i hope its better next time...the pianist ,about a polish family of jews was first rate,imo...spr, shindlers list , das boot ,english patient, patton ,from here to eternity....
My favorite movies are Kelly's Heroes, the Guns of Navaronne, and Where Eagles Dare. My favorite series was Victory at Sea and Band of Brothers.
Ohh Yeah!!! "A Bridge Too Far" is a really good one, It shows the diferences between British and Americans jejeje...
I want to say, that in the film "A Bridge Too Far" you can see the difficult relationship between Americans and British. For example, when the american official ask for the Bailey Bridge in a crude way, and the British officer reply "You are speaking about the greatest wonder of the civilized world", or something like that. Or when the XXX corps stopped its advance and the american official said "There are troops dyind in Arnhem and you stopped for the tea time?" Well I have seen the film translated to spanish, then could it be something I have understood wrong.
Ah, ok. I was just worried that this was gonna be a dig at one of the two nationalities, or at least that people would take it that way. Sorry for the over-reaction, but then your explanation is actually very interesting, so it turned out well!
Uprising (2001) was a good movie. it is about the Jewish uprisiong in the warsaw ghetto. it is also fairly realistic. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0250798/ Saints and Soldiers (2003) is very good movie. it is about a group of 5 soldiers trapped behing enemy lines after the Malmedy Massacre. it won 16 awards and 2 nominations http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0373283/#comment
