The church is not God. It is supposed to be his representation on this Earth however.

The problem is, that a perfect God is being represented by imperfect Human Beings, as a consequence the representation is less than perfect!

Don't let that put you off God though! :)

I just call myself a "non-believer" to avoid wrestling with the "atheist or agnostic" question.

    A relevant quote:

Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able ?
    Then he is not omnipotent.
Is he able, but not willing ?
    Then he is malevolent
Is God both able and willing ?
    Then whence cometh evil ?
Is he neither able nor willing ?
Then why call him God ?

    Epicurus, 341 - 271 BC

    and a nice joke:

Man sees another about to jump off a bridge, and tries to dissuade him by finding common ground:
I said, "Are you a Christian or a Jew?" He said, "A Christian."
I said, "Me too. Protestant or Catholic?" He said, "Protestant."
I said, "Me too. What franchise?" He says, "Baptist."
I said, "Me too. Northern Baptist or Southern Baptist?" He says, "Northern Baptist."
I said, "Me too. Northern Conservative Baptist or Northern Liberal Baptist?" He says, "Northern Conservative Baptist."
I said, "Me too. Northern Conservative Fundamentalist Baptist or Northern Conservative Reformed Baptist?" He says, "Northern Conservative Fundamentalist Baptist."
I said, "Me too. Northern Conservative Fundamentalist Baptist, Great Lakes Region, or Northern Conservative Fundamentalist Baptist, Eastern Region?" He says, "Northern Conservative Fundamentalist Baptist, Great Lakes Region."
I said, "Me too. Northern Conservative Fundamentalist Baptist, Great Lakes Region, Council of 1879 or Northern Conservative Fundamentalist Baptist, Great Lakes Region, Council of 1912?" He says, Northern Conservative Fundamentalist Baptist, Great Lakes Region, Council of 1912."
I said, "Die, heretic!" and I pushed him over.

Ah, the attempts to use logic to define God. ;)

Surely manevolent would be where God simply becomes a puppet-master, pulling stings to make us obey his wll regardless of what we wanted to do...

    But anyway

    Love it! So (unfortunately) true...

If we cannot answer this question, that still doesn't mean the answer is "god". It could be anything.

I can't answer this question, that is true. But why would it have to be a god that did it? All we know is that at some point the universe first emerged, and simple mathematics indicate that it emerged from a single point. That's it. All gods you can cram into this picture are wishful thinking. And even if it was in fact a god, who created that god, if he was there before anything else was? After all, you can't create or destroy energy...

Maybe there was once an über-god, who created all the other gods. But then who created Him? :D

    Tony: that was funny. :D

My point was not that there is a God but everything had to come from a source and for some they call it God.

No-one has any idea where the Universe came from - sure, it started with a single point source of unimaginable energy, but where did that come from? Maybe some superbeing did create it and the natural laws which govern this universe and led to the development of starts, planets and us. But that merely raises unanswerable questions about where the superbeing came from, so it doesn't really solve anything.

The problem with religions is when they extend from the 'initial creator' point to arguing that everything we see was created by God, instead of evolving over aeons through following the natural laws of the Universe. And furthermore that God takes a close interest in every one of us, demands our worship and insists (through His prophets and priests) we follow various rules of behaviour, some of which are sensible, others bizarre. And arbitrarily decides to cause or permit terrible disasters, sparing some from the results ("It was a miracle I survived!") while allowing others to perish.

For me, the whole notion is just too daft to take seriously.

It is funny people turn to religion when they need are in need, but it is really because they need hope and false hope I assume is better than no hope.

It's always the same , mention religion and before you know it ,
the god thing get into it .

a south american writer mention a "sect of the second thief "
    the tenets goes as follows

on the cross the first thief listen to jesus , profess his faith and is told he
    is saved ,

the second thief cut jesus short , tell him he is nailled to a cross
and dying in pain and no he doesn't want to buy anything thank you
he just want to be left to die in peace .

For which reason(s) (if there is/are) do you think you're on Earth ? If it's not too indiscreet...
I guess it's quite a delicate question, because point of view about this subject are very various(that's why i ask this question) ; but after all, if everyone expresses himself/herself intelligently, there shouldn't be any problem ! And seeing that there are reasonable persons only here :p , i'm now sure there won't be any problem ! :D
But seriously, i just want to see your different conceptions

I don't think that there is necessarily any reason for me (or anyone else) to be here: it's just an accidental chance.

Of course, if you are really asking 'why does the Universe exist?' then I have no idea at all!

    good point ,

    honestly .... I'm not sure :(

some days it's all a funny side of chemistry

on other days, this conciousness is an incarnation of the godhood
I quite like being god , it's not really practical but creating the world
every morning when I wake is making the whole working day seem
significant and the weekend a real blast ! :D

. can't wait to die , just to see !!!

Oh come on, Christmas has absolutely NO religious meaning any more, its just a commercial festival -- a way to get us to part with too much money we cant afford. If anyone mentions any religious connections, they get quietly stomped on until they go away.

Speak for yourself as I still hold religion meaning to it evan thought it is washed up as a commercial festival. Many people still hold the religious meaning to it only because the highly unreligious populations of North America have lost the meaning.
