I enjoyed reading everybodies opinion to this thread however I have a difference in opinion when it comes to the comment of nuclear weapons.
At the time when the U.S was about to bomb Japan it only bult 4 bombs. 1 was as a test the others were for use. The U.S. used 2 bombs which means it only had 1 left. That wouldnt do much to the soviet juggernaut.

Thanks Fortune and I agree. An atom bomb can do serious damage but by the wars end the soviets had the largest military land force including tanks, artillery and infantry not to mention the airforce. Yes an atomic explosion would be devistating but an attack like that would only inspire the soldiers to fight even harder. keep in mind that when the war started on the easter front the russians had nothing. compared to the germans they were a peasant force still using horses for the most part. And at the end they took Berlin. There is nothing that 1 atom bomb could do to the russians that the nazis havent done in 5 yrs. B-29s would be devistating too but equipment doesnt win the war soldiers do, and even according to churchill there was no better soldier on the european front at the end of the war then the russian.

oh and the russians had the Abomb aswell just a couple of years later, and IF a war with the soviets would of occured then it would last longer then that, which means that the soviets would retaliate in the same way..............
but who know what would off happend after all we were all allies!!!

I think both sides must have had some sort of understanding if they start dropping atomic bombs on each other no one side would win. Both sides must have seen the results on Japan and the short term effects, and had some sort of idea of the long term effect. Result both sides would not be the first to start another war which resulted in the cold war.

Having a nuclear bomb is huge, however it means very little if you do not have a delivery system. The B-29 could off been shot down before it ever reached Russia by a MIG-3, which was faster and had a higher surface ceiling.

    B-29 http://home.att.net/~sallyann2/b29-second-page.html

    MIG-3 http://experts.about.com/e/m/mi/Mikoyan-Gurevich_MiG-3.htm

If a B-29 ( best U.S. bomber )could be shot down then that would eliminate the delivery system meaning that the nuclear threat was out of the question.

And TA dont you think that the Soviets might off enticipated attacks on their industries and oil reserves?? afterall they guessed what the Germans were doing.

Slava, as Chroomeboomerang said recently, the MiG-3 was armed with 2xpeashooters and 1x12.7mm. In order to shoot down your B-29 your pilot would need a damn lot of patience to keep shooting for a long time to have any result. Anyway, that is beside the point, you wold be better served by using the big gun fighters like the 37mm Yaks.

Problems would be the industrial targets would be very very far away, at very long range even for a B-29, except Baku which was within easy reach from Iraq or Persia, and that loss would be devastating for sure. Other targets were simply at long distance and in unspecified locations as I'm sure Stalin would not have told Truman that the large tank plant was at Chelyabinsk.

Also you say that Truman would have left only one A-Bomb. True, but Stalin would not know that. However after that one was dropped and no others would be forthcoming, the bluff would have been called.

In any case, one A-Bomb on Baku or a Hamburg style raid on B-24s/B-17s starting from Persia wouldn't be much different, would it?

These are some random thoughts only. Which also help prove that the Germans really 'only' needed to conquer Persia to have the means to beat the Russians! :D

A legitamate point ZA. However it seems that you might off forgotten about the 6x 82 mm RS-82 rockets that the MIG-3 would also have under its wings. Not to mention that the amunition it was using for its so called peeshooters was highly explosive. Being more then capable of taking out multiple B-29's Especially if going for its wings.

RS-82 rockets were air to ground weapons, and Mig-3 production ceased before the B29 entered service, wonder why ;)

Slava, automatic guns of caliber 20mm and above are called 'cannons' because they fire explosive ammunition. 7.62 explosive ammo? Tony Williams, where are you in ou hour of need? Even my cat's farts would do more effect on the B-29s (which by the way would appear 2 years after the last Mig-3 was sawdust :D ).

Forget the entire notion and stick to decent fighters with 23mm or 37mm cannon. See here!

Amongst the family of the Yakovlev fighters, the Yak-9T and -9K models stand alone. Designed quite literally as 'flying artillery', the NS-37 cannon mounted by the -9T in fact fired the very same 37mm shell as the wheel-and-carriage mounted infantry anti-tank gun of the same caliber used by the Red Army until 1943... Later, quantities of the Yak-9K were produced, this carrying the even bigger 45mm NS-45 cannon...

Interestingly, however, a number of pilots throughout the VVS thought that the proper employment role for the big cannon-armed Yaks was to use them as fighters; i.e. against enemy aircraft. A single strike was all that was required to down any adversary--even a bomber--and with this capability many pilots argued that the -9T was the perfect air-superiority interceptor...

    Happy now? ;)

lol...No need to wonder this is why!!!!

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sukhoi_Su-9

As you can see after a fighter like this the MIG-3 would be considered absolete!! :D

This model being built in 46' and the later SU-11 in 47 would be more then capable of shooting down anything in the sky at that time.
