Well, you take a pen, I'll take a sword and we'll see who lasts longer in a fight.

OK, if I have to be serious and cant take the wife, I'd have to play by the rules. Judging that my dad was in RN in ww2, I'd have to put myself back to that location, so I'm British, called up I dont get that much of a choice. Im either in Navy, Army, or RAF, Im not an officer coming from my social background at the time, which thru education at that time also, I might want to fly a spitfire but they aint going to let me, so I'm not even considered for technical duties in RAF. Leaves me with RN or Army. If the RN get me Im probably going below decks and will be lucky to pull a 303 at all hands to bathing stations.....If Army as most didnt get to serve on front line duty, I have a better than average chance of ending up in support services. Again nothing technical due to level of schooling at that time for my historical social background, so looks like I'm cooking, blanket stacking or sorting out the pay books...lucky me, my chances of surviving have just been increased unless I'm down for infantry but its fair bet I wont be that either. So either way, as much as I'd like to be flying spits, serving with LRDG behind enemy lines, Ramming my LCI on to Normandy beaches or rolling forward in my brand new Firefly thru western Europe, I'll probably have a 303 somewhere close by and maybe under lock and key unless someone shouts oh christ theyve broken thru...

Much easier in the 70's, social standing improved, all volunteer....joined when they needed em not feeding em...Stefan put that pie down.

Sorry, but we were being serious weren't we?

Kinda hard to wield a tank dontcha think? A little heavy and cumbersome. BTW the MP44/StG44 used the 7.92x33mm Kurz round. The German sniper rifles used the standard 7.92x57mm IS round.

Sorry mate, pay as you dine beat you to it!

Interesting post though. I guess if I were to work it out seriously I'd have had to look at the two sides of my family. My grandfather had working class parents but won a scholarship to the grammar school, was in the OTC and Home Guard before commissioning shortly before his 19th birthday (I think). He was posted to an infantry battallion and went off to do infantry things in Italy. In terms of weaponry? Well he had various things at various times, usually a pistol of enemy origin (a P38 or baretta apparently, his issue pistol being confined to his pack for the duration) and either a rifle or thompson when he managed to pinch one. Keep in mind however that the army in Italy was hardly known for being strict about that kind of thing but he did explain that he kept what he was issued and carried other weapons to make him less easily identifiable as an officer.

On the other side, well my grandfather was sent down a mine for the duration, his weapons were a pick and a sense of humour about the fact he originally applied for the RAF like my great uncle. Either case, no option when it comes to weapons.

    Good idea Urqh.
