Well, Wagner, the God of the German opera...!!!

I am precisely listening to Richard Wagner's "Lohengrin", Act II, scene II when Elsa is forgiving Ortrud and they are praying to Wotan and Freia, the Gods... beautifully mystical!

My favourite is "Tannhäuser", the overture is the most beautiful one ever written and the Bacanal Ballet is an orgy of music and dancing... I love it! And when Godess Venus gets mad is very beautiful and scary... [IMG]

Unfortunately I cannot sing two wagnerian notes without ruining my voice... I have to sing baroque opera, which is much lighter but as beautiful as wagnerian opera.

I don't like Verdi too much, but I love Russian opera (Tchaikovski, Rimski-Korsakov, Mossourski, Borodin), French (Gounod, Bizet, Massenet, DeLibes) and the always likeable Italian (Rossini, Donizetti, Bellini, Puccini, Verdi) and the Germans (Offenbach, Boito, Wagner, Mozart, Haydn, Von Gluck, Von Weber, Strauss) and my favourite and the one I sing: BAROQUE (Händel, Purcell, Vivaldi, Monteverdi, Scarlatti, Lulli, Von Gluck) !!! The only operas in which the main male-heroic rôle sings like a woman...

You don't have to know Classical music to enjoy it. Just listen! And you'll see that you'll learn while listening it. [IMG]

Friedrich, that was my plan too, listen and enjoy, learning comes next. It is the same logic I implied to reading, just read, understanding is secondary and you can always read it again. Actually my younger brother is a Wagner 'fan' (if there is such a thing), he is developing his interest in classical music at a fearsome rate.

Well if were talking classical/opera...then Ill leave Doris Day and Que serra serra to one side and opt for Beathovens ninth...up and down like a yo yo..put it on when driving down motorway...watch stares from other drivers as first you crawl along fast lane at 40 mph then speed up in slow lane to 100 mph whilst waving at other drivers who dont realise your conducting them....peasants...no character..and their car horns are out of tune..

I guess this is the great place to ask this now:

Was Götterdämmerung (Twilight of the Gods) by Wagner Eva Braun´s favourite?

Kai: I am not sure about Eva Braun's favourite one. But I know that the Führer's favourite was "Lohengrin". He loved that mighty knight, which goes winning through his life by his only WILL... Now we know where did nazi ideology come from...

I agree with you Stefan! And tell your brother that he's going in the right way! Wagnerian singers have my outmost respect... Wagner loved to torture his singers, using them as if they were simple trumpets...

Urgh, Beethoven's 9th is not precisely my favourite. But I love it anyway! And the MOST beautiful part is the 3rd movement, Adagio molto e cantabile. And it annoys me because no one pays attention to it because they are expecting the famous 4th, Presto allegro assai and the "Ode an die Freude".

I truly enjoy classical music. Any of the great masters from Chopin to Wagner, but Wagner, ahhhh, Richard Wagner, now THAT is music I can appreciate.

And too, I must admit that when our collecting brotherhood is together, we must dust off the old Wunschkonzert tapes, and listen to the old German radio broadcasts to the troops.

Other than that I can listen to a little bit of everything other than opera, and rap. Can't go there.

I always find it rather enjoyable at re-enactment events when we end up sitting or standing round singing various songs. Often we end up with us at one end of a field singing German songs and the Allies at the other singing British and US songs. We also end up with some of the ex-soldiers in our group singing 'traditional' British army songs which a fair few of us join in. Then there are the 'bawdy ballads' that follow naturally.

Man, the cure still tours?!?!?! I saw them, I think, 11 years ago. They were considered an old band then! Nothing against them, it's cool that they still tour. I guess with all that makeup, no one can tell how old they are.

Wilconqr: YES!! My father and I are both fans, I think he has every Zappa CD and almost all the LPs that are available, saw him in concert once and is a big fan. I am more laid back (I do not generally call myself a fan because I hardly ever know much about groups or composers I like). I must say, it isn't often that I run into anyone who knows anything much about 'the man himself', though I reckon Zappa and his music are an essential tool/guide for living in the modern world. So much of it makes sense and so much of it is going to take me the rest of my life to figure out!

Doc: Yeah, they played in Hdye park I think. Actually loads of 'old' bands are still about and playing over here, I seem to remember a friend of mine going to a Manfred Mann concert a little while back.

Oh yeah, going to the "Boss"´ concert in a couple of weeks...!!

Better start playing " The River" and " Born in the USA"..

One funny thing. Lately I´ve listened to the famous Frankie goes to Hollywood tunes " Relax " and "Two tribes". Got any nice memories of those...?

    ;)

Kai! Is he playing in Helsinki?

He opened the show in Holland with an slow, ascoustic version of Born In The USA. He didn't play The River, you are lucky if he plays that 'cause he doesn't do that one live that much any more!

Concert was great though. Of course lots of The Rising, but Badlands and Born To Run are musts...lots of songs you should remember! ;)

Geez, I wish I could go again...

    Thanx for telling that Stevin!

Yes, The Boss will have two concerts in Helsinki on 16th and 17th June and I´ll see him on 17th.

Actually the funny story about this is that the concert on 17th was advertised as the one and only concert but because there were so many people coming they decided to have another concert. But because the next concert would be soon ( in Oslo I think ? ) they could only arrange it for Monday 16th...And they did?! But I´m happy to go to the concert anyway even if it´s the second concert in Finland!

    ;)
