If I had a choice I'd be a politician. The people who send us to war never die for it.

A factory job in Novosibirsk might be alright, aside from keeping on the commissars good side I would get to spend time around tanks that wouldnt shoot at me.

My first choice earlier was to fight with my grand fathers in german army!;):)and to fly a mosquito fighter/bomber.
My second choice would to join and fight for the Allied Commando units or the SAS!
These units have plan jobs that go behind the emeny lines and destroy emeny's soldiers and equitment before the major assalts comes from the main units!

Why did your grandfather voluntarily chose to fight for the bad guys?

Well, the Germans gave my country it is independence from terror of Jugoslavia, so the Croatia become an ally to Germany, and we sent a Croatia legion consisting of 9, 000 men to support them in the Eastern front-Stalingrad. My grandfather fought for Croatia and Germany for our common goal. It is a fact that Germans gave us our freedom, and I don’t consider them as bad guys, although I agree that some crimes that they committed are terrible and I would be very happy if that had never happened.

Thanks for not taking any offense. I re-read my post afterwards and realized that it may have come off a little rough.

Thanks for the reply and welcome. ;)

Remember that the winner writes history and facts are often distorted so I keep a open mind about this good guy bad guy stuff and everybody had soldiers who committed crimes because war brings out the worst out of the worst. No I am not a nazi or a communist but I had ancestors who fought for both the Germans and the Soviets. I wish I could have met them but two out of the three perished in the war from what I have researched. The other recently passed away and he made it to Berlin from what I understand.

Very well said, I completely agree with that, and unfortunately I feel that it is a fact so often overlooked, especially here in the US. The typical image of World War II that most people have is that our "saintly" soldiers saved the world from the evils of Germany and Japan, and that our troops always respected the rights and dignity of others. In my opinion this is partly because that is what people want to believe and partly because throughout the years those little "slip-ups" that some Allied troops might have made have been covered up under the massive heap of Axis evil. Again, as Vet said, I am not a Nazi or a communist I am just simply trying to point out a flaw in todays society that is often passed by without consideration.

I think the big difference between the Allied "slip ups" and the German and Japanese situations comes down to policy. In the case of the Allies, there was no policy of committing atrocities. Of course they existed. This was war and it happened. However, when these actions were brought to the attention of higher commands, individual responsible were punished. In the case of Germany and Japan, standard policy encouraged such behavior. Troops engaged in such behaviors with the full support of their superiors as well as the government. I think that makes a big difference when considering the two sides.

Right, that's a very good point, and that is what makes the axis powers the "bad guys" and the Allies the "good guys" And I absolutly believe that is true. While there are some cases where the Germans or Japanese might have been looked upon as good such as Beastie Boy explained, the greater part of the world saw them as bad and they are therefore deemed such. Going back to your point, what I was trying to explain in my first post is that yes the allies were good and the axis were bad but we should not forget those speed bumps the allies had along the way. This topic can easily be carried out of just WWII as what this is really talking about is "does the end justify the means" Are any allied actions breaking the Geneva conventions able to be overlooked because they won the war? The morally right answer may be debated for decades but the generally accepted one is "yes."

I completely agree with you. The only truth is that every army in ww2 had its share of war crimes and if the Germans won the war, now we would be reading about bombing of Dresden or atomic bomb over Hiroshima and Russian terror of Poland, Estonia, Latvia and others as the biggest war crimes.

Do any one knows about recent discovered Russian document saying that Russia was preparing to invade Europe?
