I am sure that you are granting absolution to the two finest war movies ever made:

    Sands of Iwo Jima (1949)
    Battle Cry (1955)

They fall in the "some" catagory.

Now "1941"(1979), is another WWII you have to enjoy or HATE....

I would have to go with Hells Raiders, awful acting, a lame excuse in the script for why the germans are using Modern equipment and too top it of all the guns in the movie only fire once so during a battle scene it shows a soldier fire then switch the camera and show someone else fire, then switches back to the other then so on and so on.. got a three on IMBD and the reviewers give it the reason to hate it... by the way saw it on demand so I didnt have to pay a cent thank God!

I would go for 'Enemy At The Gates', 'Pearl Harbor' and 'Saving Private Ryan'. You can criticize me, but that's just my opinion.

I agree with the first two, and perhaps to some extent Saving Private Ryan could be called bad, but far from the worst. If the movie made actual ww2 veterans cry while watching it, they must have done something right.:)

Yeah, I've got to agree with you on that, the film was superbly done from an artistic point of view, Spielberg did an awesome job, however, even though it did say that it was based on real life events, I just can't imagine a mission like that occurring in Normandy in 1944. Excuse me for saying that, I just can't fathom a group of 8 or 10 men going on a suicide run, practically, deep into enemy lines, to save a private of no particular importance, obeying an order given by the US Army Chief of Staff (!) or whoever it was, who was apparently deeply moved by the story of a mother who's lost 3 of her 4 sons in the war. I'm sorry, that just sounds a little too Hollywood to me. Stories of mothers losing all of their sons are not uncommon throughout WWII, and I've got to say many of them occurred in the USSR, with mothers losing up to 5 or 6 sons and daughters. Again, you could contradict me, and I'd be glad if you d, because I'd very much like to find out about that film's historical relevancy.

Caught this one swirling around the bowl yesterday:

"The Guns of Navarone" ....probably a very good book and should never have brought to the screen. The only bright spot is David Niven.

    Pearl Habor.

So bad it managed to offend a nation (Britain) which had no involvement in the attack.

In the film they managed to move the date of the Battle Of Britain from 1940 to 1941, they had serving USAF pilots flying for the RAF, and worse of all they had RAF officers coming out with lines like this " God help anyone who gets into a war with the Americans".

Wow! Compared to its sequel "Force 10 from Navarone" "Guns of Navarone" is Oscar material.

Having said that I wil agree with you about David Niven, a brilliant actor and WWII veteran as was Anthony Quayle (SOE in Albania)

You were watching it on TCM too? Yeah I'm not really fond of that movie as well, despite the stars. I only watched it to kill time until Ice Station Zebra came on.

Pearl Harbor was a terrible ww2 movie, if you can even call it a ww2 movie? I always thought it was more of a love story than a ww2 movie.

Pearl Harbor is pretty bad, but I must confess that I own it on VHS.

Here's my problem with it. If you are going to water down history and distort it to accomidate a mixed audience, at least get the visuals correct.

My biggest nitpick about the movie is how they recreated battleship row.

ARGGGGHHHHHH......how hard is it to make a correct battleship row!!!!!!

How about making battleship row at all? There were battleships all over the harbor in the scene when Kimmel inspects it!!!

USS Okalahoma right next to the Arizona, common!!!!

It seems so simple to make something CG like that correct with the tye of a computer key!!!!

Oh well, we will always have that song from "Team America" -

Pearl Harbor sucked........and I miss you!

I don't know if this has been mentioned in the thread yet, but The Last Drop is by far the worst movie ever made.

I still think Windtalkers and Thin Red Line (1988) are among the very worst of all time.

"Windtalkers." Not only was it pure Hollywood (and not in a good way) but it was seriously over dramatized and the battle scenes were nothing but slow-motion clips of Japanese troops getting shot down. Oh, and did I mention the whole 30-1 kill ratio favoring the Americans, even though the Japanese were dug in and the Americans were using human wave tactics that were outdated by the Civil War?

Here's how I feel about Pearl Harbor....

Fact: Two US Army pilots got up in P40's, both got the DSC for it.
Fact: We bombed Japan with bombers off a carrier, led by Jimmy Doolittle
Fact: Dorey Miller got the Navy Cross for doing **** on deck
    Fiction: Everything else.
