Well, sort of I'm using a map, and those two are the closets villages to Argetan that are on it.

    Saint Lambert-sur-Dives

I am not allowed to post the whole story here, but an LAH veteran wrote:
'Dann kam der Absetzbefehl in der Richtung Le Sap-Monnai. Es konnte kein zusammenhängendes absetzen sein, denn St. Lambert und die Ruckzugstraße war eine Straße des Todes.'

Absolutely correct, Timo. Pity, I'd love to hear that story !

By the way, from the painting, the distinctive church tower is still there, the curve in the road is still there, and if you look carefully, pieces of the German column can be found in the hedges.

    So - over to you . . . . . ;)

    Okay, here goes:

Some of you know that my research is focused on the career of SS-Sturmbannführer Knittel and his unit. He was commander of SS-Panzer-Aufklärungs-Abteilung 1 LSSAH and was awarded the Ritterkreuz on 04.06.1944.

But for what action/achievement was he awarded this medal?

    Please give me:
    - timeframe or date
    - location
    - involved wehrmacht unit

Thanks Timo. I used the article written by you and Mr. Murhpy. [IMG]

Here is my question. It is an easy one but interesting one. There were 5 documented Americans having served in the Waffen SS. There was one who defected by stealing an american plane and presenting it to the Germans. Please provide the following.

Name and rank of the individual:
    Unit he was assigned to:
    Commander of that Unit:

    Good luck

I don't usually try these Waffen-SS ones as I'm not an expert but was it ; -

2nd Lieutenant Martin James Monti, who absconded in a F/4 ( maybe F/5 ) photo-recon version of the P38 in October 1944, flying from Naples to Milan where he defected.
Allocated to the SS-Standarte Kurt Eggers he was given the rank of SS-Untersturmfuhrer. The Commander was Gunther D'Alquen. I think !

This is by far the longest thread I have ever seen here so far! I have been following along the whole time, I though I was onto something when I started this quiz thread up. ;)

Thats not a bad idea. Won't this thread soon be reaching its limits. Maybe a section for quizzes were we could have several sections. Otto, wot you think.
