Packard built Merlin 28, 38 or 224 - 12 cylinder 60 degree vee-type liquid cooled in line engines with two stage supercharger.

Airframes built by A. V. Roe.

    KmPok that's a bl**dy good answer ! [IMG]

I was sure everyone would go for Rolls-Royce. A lot of books still say the Dambusters flew Lanc' Is and they didn't - they flew Lancaster IIIs.

The engines were in fact Packard Merlin 224s - the slightly 'beefed up' version.

    Over to you........

Thanks Martin. I've being doing some reading on the Dambuster Lanc's recently.

I hardly think I am qualified to ask a question in such august company, but I'll give it a go.

The standard issue German machine pistol was the MP40. It was ususally refered to by the Allies as a 'Schmeisser". What is wrong with this statement?

Incidentally, Martin, I thought they only used the 224 after the May raid to carry the 'earthquake' bombs used to destroy sub-pens and V2 silos

Depends who you read, KmPok - there has been much confusion over this point.

But I tend to go with Rolls-Royce authority Alec Harvey-Bailey, who confirms ( in ' The Merlin In Perspective : The Combat Years ' ) that the Dams aircraft were specially fitted with 224s due to the higher supercharger boost available.

But I'm always open to discussion on this one - it's a trivial point maybe, but one which really interests me !

I bow to your superior reading, Martin. Overkill on the thrust for a 9,000lb payload tho'.

But hey, I never had to sit on top of one of those bombs. I'd want to get it where it was going quickly too. :D

    G'day

The design of the MP-38/40/41 is often credited to Schmeisser but the design is probably made at the ERMA plant.

    Popski

Martin, could you stop messing follish Friedrich up?! [IMG] The 'Johnny' Johnson I know is John Edgar Johnson, wing commander, 38 victories, still alive. Right?

    And the answer would be:

Hugo Schmeißer, popular hand-guns designer didn't participate in the Maschinepistol 1938's designs. He was only the director of the factory Haenel von Schul, where the weapon was produced during the war.
The real father of the 'Schmeißer' was Berthold Geiper, director of Erfurter Maschinenfabrik Werke, who since the early 1930s experimented and tested many sub-machine-guns that would lead to the creation of the incredible MP-38 and its later versions.

    HeHeHeeeee....
    :D :D :D

Friedrich, I'm sorry but 'your' 'Johnnie' Johnson was indeed James Edgar J who very sadly passed away on January 30th 2001.

( BTW Welcome back, Popski ! You've been a bit quiet lately... )

Hehe..this is the sort of thing that can lead to tears, verbal abuse, fistfights, and culminate in a major international incident.... ;)

Basically, if it's your question, KmPok, you call the shots. Both answers are right, and indeed Friedrich gave far more detail, but usually it's who gets in first.

    Anyway, Friedrich ( [IMG] ) is a forgiving chap, he'll understand ! ;) [IMG]

    Thnx Martin.

I know, let's have two questions. One from Popski and one from Frieddie.

    That's fair, isn't it?

Alright. Popski already asked the question and it was indeed his turn. I hadn't seen his post. Otherwise, I wouldn't have bothered in answering the question... [IMG]
