KM the naphlam was only used at night by P-61's of the 422nd and 425th NF squadrons. I have their full unit histories through microfische.

Day light involvement was through dive-bombing and strafing MT columns

it's not new but many folks do not know that htis was used at night and by a night fighter squadron's no less !

From December 23rd 44 onward anything that moved on the ground was shot up, even US MT columns. The useage of combined twin engine and four engine bombers from the 9th and 8th AF was used to ill effect against German held bridges, crossing points, airfields and railway lines.
Besides P-38's P-47's there were also the wicked RAF Typhoons firing rockets.

For Bastogne there was a relief op designated Repulse performed by some 200 plus C-47's these being escorted by P-47's from 4 fighter-bomber groups........
P-47's from the Mogin Maulers, the 362nd did their job on troops surrounding Bastogne and smashed supporting bridges with rockets. This from their fg history. Another source states they also used Naphalm but I have not heard of it's useage during the day.....though anything would not surprise me.
And according to friends in the 354th with P-47 (which they hated with a passion)this US fighter unit attacked armor of the Panzer Lehr Division.

On this date of Decmber 23 44 although the B-26's of the 9th did their duty they were assaulted in a terrible fashion by at least 3 German fighter Geschwadern with the heavy Sturmjägers of IV.Sturm/JG 3 taking on two B-26 groups and shot down over 27 B-26's in a brutal attack from the rear. I have a very interesting account by one of the pilots and friend Oskar Bösch who was almost shot down in this attack....

According to Charles B. MacDonald in ' A Time For Trumpets ' , aircraft of the 9th appeared over the areas North and Northwest of Bastogne at 10am on the 23rd, and attacked German assembly areas in the woods ( pinpointed by vehicle tracks in the snow ) with Napalm. This set the evergreen trees alight, and by the end of the day the smoke made it seem 'almost as if the fog was closing in again'.

So, by my reckoning, KnightMove gets it !

Who is, regarding today's publicity of his family name, the most famous 3rd Reich character? And yes, he IS outgunning Hitler.

 

Goering I would have to say being that he was Hitler's right hand man and I wouldn't know anyone else who could match up to Hitler other then Goering, Goebbels, and Rommel. But I would have to go with Goearing.

 

Hint: My wording "publicity of his family name" is well considered.

This man left a heritage for which his name is one of the most famous terms in the world. He as a person, and his background, are still established enough, but not as famous as his name. He's not someone you would mention in the first row of top nazis or military.

Hmmm, another hint: Even though most people in the world have no clue who Graf Ferdinand von Zeppelin was, still much more people know what a zeppelin is. Even of those who don't know, many might love the songs of Led Zeppelin. It's similar with our guy.

 

Martin do you have any other BoBulge source that states Naphalm ? The Jabo's used much fragmentation and HE in the woods and just about anywhere plus rockets so German MT's blew up like an explosive balloon........

He was never a member of the party nor was he close to any nazi! And he's better remembered because of his actions during WWI!

 

As I said, this person was not a member of the NSDAP, but he was familiar and good friend with Hitler. Himmler made him honorary SS-Oberführer. He was not politically active, neither a soldeier, but rightfully blamed for unjustified, inhuman and sometimes deadly treatment of people over who he had been given power.

Dammit, it's not SO difficult... as I said, his name is even more famous than Hitler. An average 4-year old boy might have never heard about Hitler yet, but be perfectly familiar with this name, resp. goods associated with it.
