Well, Martyn was first but mikebatzel had a more complete list ...so

First response to this gets a go: Which Captain (name /ship) of Taffy 3 was referred to as "Chief"?

    Thanks texson.
Keeping with the Johnston, and this should be easy, Which Japanese Battleship got closest to the Johnston during the Battle off Samar?

Correct Jeff. After being ordered to only fire on what can be seen for fear of hitting friendly ships, Lt. Robert C. Hagen said after the battle, "At 8:20, there suddenly appeared out of the smoke a 30,000-ton Kongō-class battleship, only 7,000 yards off our port beam. I took one look at the unmistakable pagoda mast, muttered, 'I sure as hell can see that!" and opened fire.

There where two Kongo class shipin the fight. Kongo and Haruna, Haruna had a damaged prop, and thus lagged behind most of the battle, leaving us with just Kongo.
    Yer, up

Here's an easy one for y'all.

What US ship, when entering a harbor, was greeted with a tongue in cheek message asking it not to fire, because the crew of the ship sending the message claimed it was of the same political party?

This ship was sunk June 1945. A kamikaze dived for the ship and missed. Unfortunately, the bomb it was carrying sank beneath the ship and detonated, causing the ship to sink 3 hours later with no loss of life.

I hope I'm not jumping the gun here but to keep moving....

The US navy is currently building two new destroyers of a new class. The namesake of the new class began his career in WW2 on which ship?

You can have it back, Mike. I'm not where I can find a good Q to ask.
